Thread Black 12/0 nano silk (a 6/0 or 8/0 builds the taper faster)
Materials
Antron or poly yarn White poly yarn (Short doubled length for the gills)
Bead Black bead (1, sized to the hook)
Wire Silver wire (2 mm / medium, first rib)
Wire Black wire (2 mm / medium, second rib)
Anti-static bag strip (ASB) Natural silver/grey anti static bag strip (1 mm, one length for the body)
Holographic tinsel Copper flashabou (Short length for the wing case / copper top)
UV resin Clear uv resin (Thin coat (or 2-3 coats of clear nail polish))
How to tie it
With the bead off, start black thread right behind the eye and tie in a short doubled length of white antron or poly yarn as the gills, hanging out over the eye. Wrap back roughly the length of the bead so the tie-in hides under it, trim the butts on a taper, whip finish and cut the thread.
Slide the black bead on over the gills and re-attach the thread behind it. Spin the bobbin counterclockwise to flatten the thread, then wrap back to the 20% point (just short of the bend) to establish the body length.
Tie in the silver wire along the near side of the shank all the way to the rear tie-in point, then bring the thread back to the bead, flattening it again as you go.
Tie in the black wire along the top of the shank, running it a fraction farther back than the silver, and again return the thread forward.
Build the body taper with flattened thread: run to the halfway point and back, then a quarter of the way and back, until you have a slim body with a thickening front third. Cover the rear end well. You do not want to go back over it.
Tie in the 1 mm ASB strip, run it back to the rear and forward again, flattening the thread on each pass to finish the taper.
Wrap the ASB forward with a small gap between each turn so the black thread shows through and there is room for both ribs. Tie off at the bead and trim.
Follow the ASB forward with the silver wire, laying each turn right up against the back edge of the ASB wrap. Tie off. Then follow the silver with the black wire, laying it beside the silver and partly on top of the ASB so it pins the strip down. Tie off both and trim.
Wax the thread, tie in copper holographic tinsel and take three or four tight turns right behind the bead to form the copper top, keeping the transition smooth. Tie off, trim, and whip finish behind the bead.
Trim the gills to length, not too long, not too short. Coat the copper top with UV resin first and cure it, then put small dabs of resin on the body and spread them thin so the ribbing texture still shows. Cure.
