Teal or mallard flank Natural barred (or blue-dyed) teal mallard flank (1 large feather for the collar)

How to tie it
Start black GSP thread three or four eye-lengths behind the eye and take open wraps back to about the hook point. Wax the thread heavily. The wing fiber is slippery and this pattern lives or dies on wax.
Tie in silver holographic tinsel at the rear and wrap it forward in touching turns with no gaps to the 80% point, tie off and trim. This underbody flashes through the wing as the fly breathes.
Cut a finger's width of white predator fiber about 4-5 in. long. Before tying it in, pull the bundle back through your fingers and let the tips stagger so it tapers like a baitfish, then square up the butt end.
Wax the thread again, lay a waxed thread base on the shank, and tie the white bundle in on top with a couple of loose wraps to set it, then tighten and bind it forward hard. Wrap back over the butts and forward again.
Cut a slightly smaller bundle of blue predator fiber, cut it a touch longer than the white, taper it the same way, wax again, and tie it in on top as the overwing. Bind it down tight and build a little bulk over the butts.
Prepare a large teal or mallard flank feather by stripping the fluff. Tie it in by the exposed tip, double the tip back and bind it down, then trim the waste. Wrap it forward as a collar in slightly open, almost-palmered turns, stroking all the fibers rearward on every turn so nothing gets trapped. Tie off tight and trim the stem.
Whip finish here, cut the thread, and put a small dab of CA glue on the wraps.
Start fluorescent red thread at the collar and wrap a bright, prominent hot-spot head back to the base of the flank feather and forward again. Whip finish, cut off, and brush the flank fibers out.
Test-fit the clear soft head over the front. Slide it off, put a good dab of CA glue all the way around the thread head and the base of the fibers, then push the soft head firmly back on and pinch it until it sets.
