Classic Recipe

  • Hook standard wet fly (e.g. Mustad 3906), 8-14
  • Thread red 8/0

Materials

  • Tag Red floss (or flat gold tinsel) (small)
  • Tail Barred grey mallard flank fibers (small bunch)
  • Body White chenille (or pale grey/white floss) (full shank)
  • Hackle Brown hen hackle, tied as a beard/collar (1)
  • Wing Barred grey mallard flank (matched slip)
  • Head Red buzzer wrap (small)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a red thread base and form a small tag of red floss above the barb.
  2. Tie in a short tail of barred grey mallard flank fibers.
  3. Wind a plump white chenille body forward, leaving room at the eye.
  4. Wind or tie in a brown hen hackle as a soft beard swept down.
  5. Set a rolled or matched slip of barred grey mallard flank as a low wet-fly wing over the body.
  6. Whip finish a small red head and cement.
