Reference Recipe

  • Hook Heavy saltwater/streamer hook (Umpqua X-series 420), 4
  • Thread White 50 denier (nano silk)

Materials

  • Select hackle feathers (tail) White (Mr. White) (2)
  • Ripple ice fiber / flash (tail) Subtle (sparse)
  • Polar chenille (body filler) White jelly fritz (1 length)

How to tie it

  1. Secure the size 4 hook and start the 50-denier nano silk in the middle of the shank to keep bulk low at the head.
  2. Build a small material bump at the tie-in point with thread (and a touch of super glue), folding it back to form a bullet base for the tail.
  3. Tie in two hackle feathers as the tail, flat-to-flat against the bump; before securing each, lift the feather and take a wrap onto the shank so forward tension won't disturb the rear tie-in. Add a sparse amount of flash.
  4. Tie in polar chenille at the bump, wrap the thread forward with a touch of super glue on it, then wrap the polar chenille forward to fill the body without adding weight; tie off.
  5. Build the head and collar forward, then whip finish and add cement.
