Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 10-16
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Rear hackle Brown hackle (2-3 wraps)
  • Body Peacock herl (full)
  • Front hackle White or cream front hackle (2-3 wraps)

How to tie it

  1. Mount hook, lay a base to the bend.
  2. Wrap 2-3 turns of brown hackle right at the bend.
  3. Tie in 2-3 peacock herls, twist into a rope, and wrap a full body forward to one eye-length behind the eye.
  4. Wrap 2-3 turns of white or cream hackle at the front.
  5. Whip finish between the front hackle and the eye.

Substitutions

  • Body instead of Peacock herl: Peacock Ice Dub — Much more durable; UV Peacock dubbing — Adds UV trigger; Synthetic Peacock Chenille — Indestructible
  • Rear hackle instead of Brown: Furnace hackle — Dark center, brown edges. Attractive; Coachman brown — Classic rich brown
  • Front hackle instead of White or cream: Badger — White with dark center stripe; Light ginger — Warmer light tone
