Remote Control Soft Hackle
Wet Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version
Reference Recipe
- Hook Standard dry/nymph (TMC 206BL), 16-20
- Thread Dun 14/0
Materials
- Tail Coq de Leon (small tuft)
- Wire rib (X-small) Copper wire (1 length)
- Dubbing Olive/pheasant (as needed)
- Wing case Thin foam (1 strip)
- Soft hackle Partridge or hen (or CDC) (1 feather / tuft)
How to tie it
- Start thread and lay a base to the bend. Tie in a short tuft of Coq de Leon fibers as a tail, half a shank long.
- Catch in a length of X-small copper wire at the tail.
- Dub a slim body two-thirds up the shank.
- Counter-wrap the copper wire forward in 4-5 open turns for a rib, then tie off and break the wire.
- Tie in a thin strip of foam at the thorax pointing back, this becomes the wing case that helps the fly lift and ride in the film.
- Wrap a partridge or hen soft hackle (or a turn of CDC) at the front for legs and sweep it back.
- Pull the foam strip forward over the thorax as a low wing case, tie it down behind the eye and trim.
- Whip finish and cement.
