Reiner's Pink Pookie

Dry Fly · Terrestrial · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL-3XL dry/hopper (TMC 5212), 6-8
  • Thread Red 6/0

Materials

  • Foam underbody (2mm) Pink foam mm (1 strip)
  • Foam overbody (2mm) Tan fly tying foam (1 strip)
  • Wing Natural deer or elk hair (1 clump)
  • Foam indicator (2mm) Orange foam strip (1 small tab)
  • Rubber legs Yellow grizzly-barred hackle (2 pairs)
  • Zap-A-Gap Clear head cement (as needed)

How to tie it

  1. Start red thread at the eye and lay a base back to above the barb.
  2. Cut a strip of pink 2mm foam for the underbody; bind it along the top of the shank from the bend forward, brushing Zap-A-Gap underneath as you go, leaving a stub of foam past the bend.
  3. Layer a tan 2mm foam strip over the pink and bind at the same tie-down points so the body shows tan on top and pink below; segment it with two thread cinches.
  4. Stack a clump of natural deer or elk hair and tie it in at the front tie-down as a down-wing so the tips reach the back of the body.
  5. Tie a pair of yellow grizzly-barred rubber legs to each side at the middle tie-down point.
  6. Cap the head with a small tab of orange foam as a hi-vis indicator and lock it with a couple of firm turns.
  7. Whip finish under the foam head and add a drop of cement.
