Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 16-18
  • Thread Dark brown or purple 8/0

Materials

  • Wing Dun poly, CDC or dun hackle tips (1 upright)
  • Tail (split microfibbets) Medium/dark dun tailing fibers (few fibers)
  • Body Mahogany quill or dubbing (as needed)
  • Dry hackle Blue dun hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and tie an upright divided dun hackle-tip wing (or a single dun post) about one shank tall.
  2. Tail: split a few dun microfibbets or hackle fibers at the bend, one shank long.
  3. Wrap a stripped mahogany quill (or dub a slim mahogany body) forward to the wing for fine segmentation.
  4. Tie in a blue-dun dry hackle at the wing.
  5. Wrap 2-3 turns behind and in front of the wing for a Catskill collar (or, for a parachute, wind around the post and tie off beneath it).
  6. Whip finish and cement.
