Reference Recipe

  • Hook Heavy predator/saltwater (e.g. TMC 600SP), 2/0-3/0
  • Thread White or to match GSP 200D or heavy 3/0

Materials

  • Bucktail (belly) White bucktail (several clumps)
  • Bucktail (back) Peacock/Chartreuse or to match bucktail (several clumps)
  • Flash Pearl/holo (as needed)
  • 3D eyes To match eyes (1 pair)
  • UV resin Clear uv resin (head coat)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at the bend. Tie in a sparse white bucktail tail 1.5-2 shank lengths long, add flash, then a darker top bucktail for a two-tone baitfish back.
  2. Work up the shank tying small stacked clumps of bucktail top and bottom to build a tapered body, adding flash between clumps.
  3. Near the eye tie a full collar of bucktail pointing forward over the eye, then sweep it all back and lock it with thread. This reverse-tied flare pushes water and adds bulk without weight.
  4. Build a thread head and glue a 3D eye to each side.
  5. Coat the head and eyes with UV resin and cure, then whip finish under the collar.
