Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 2 versions

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Heavy-wire scud (Daiichi 1120), 18-20 (up to 12 for lakes)
  • Thread Black 70 denier

Materials

  • Tungsten bead Black nickel bead (1 (2.0mm on #18))
  • Body & rib tubing (micro) Brown permanent marker (1 strand)
  • Mirage tinsel (medium) Opal mirage tinsel medium (1 strand)
  • Holographic tinsel Red holographic tinsel (1 short length)
  • UV resin Clear uv resin (thin coat)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the black-nickel tungsten bead on and seat it behind the eye. Start black thread and lay a base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a strand of brown micro Body & Rib tubing at the bend.
  3. Wrap thread forward to just behind the bead, then wrap the tubing forward in even, slightly overlapping turns for a segmented body; tie off behind the bead.
  4. Tie a strand of opal Mirage over the top as a subtle flash back.
  5. Build a few turns of red holographic tinsel right behind the bead to form the bright red-neck collar; secure it.
  6. Whip finish, then coat the whole body with a thin layer of UV resin and cure for a glassy, durable finish.
