How to tie it
Build the rear section first: on a size 4 Streamer Stripper tie in dark olive strung saddle over brown as the tail, add Super Pearl Flash in olive brown, then stack dark brown Salty Craft Fur to build a bulky rear body. Craft fur holds shape but collapses slim when wet, so the fly casts without soaking up water.
Connect a 25mm articulated shank behind the rear hook and build the two middle sections the same way, flash then craft fur on each. The multiple joints are what give the fly its snaking, side-to-side action on the strip.
Join the front size 2 hook to the rear assembly with 30lb Rio Wirebite. The wire does double duty: it stiffens the articulation enough to track, and it is bite protection where a toothy fish grabs the fly.
Add flash and craft fur to the front section as before with a copper Flashabou underwing beneath, then switch to Semperfli Nanosilk 300D - you cannot spin deer hair tight enough on ordinary thread.
Spin brown olive deer belly for the head, then add a band of fluorescent bright red deer belly and continue spinning to the eye. That red band is the stripe the fly is named for and it is the visible trigger on a wake.
Pack the hair hard, whip finish, and trim the head to a broad flat-faced wedge with a collar swept back. The flat face is what makes it dive and push water on the strip and float back up on the pause.
Glue 5.0mm fluorescent red epoxy eyes to the sides of the head, set them with Solarez Flex and seal with Bone Dry. Fish it with sharp strips so it dives and wakes, pausing to let it rise.
