Mount a size 14 curved shank hook carrying a 2.8mm tungsten bead; no extra weight goes on. Start red 140 denier thread - the thicker thread makes the tapered body easier - and lay a couple of layers of base.
Take the thread back to the bend and snip the tag off.
Bind in the midge-size red vinyl well forward of the bend so its butt thickens the body, then wrap back over it, keeping it parallel to the shank, to where the body will start.
Return the thread to the front and bind in four strands of Crystal Flash, wrapping back to the same starting point; snip the front ends off.
Spin the Crystal Flash strands loosely together and wrap them forward as the under body, up to the front of the fly.
With the strands coming off the top, lock them with a wrap in front and a wrap back over them, then snip them shorter to keep them out of the way - this is the wing.
Wrap the red vinyl forward in deliberately spaced turns so the Crystal Flash shows through underneath, stopping two or three securing wraps behind the wing, then snip it off.
Sweep the wing back with a couple of wraps and build a modest thorax at the front.
Trim the wing to length, whip finish, and finish with a drop of head cement or UV resin.
