Tungsten bead Silver or black bead (2.8 mm, sized to the hook)
Vinyl rib Red buzzer wrap (Midge size, one strand)
Crystal Flash Pearl flashabou (Four strands (small diameter))
How to tie it
Slide a 2.8 mm tungsten bead onto the curved shank hook and start heavy red thread behind it. The thicker thread makes it much easier to build a tapered underbody.
Lay a couple of layers of thread base from behind the bead back to the bend and snip the tag.
Tie in the red midge vinyl rib near the front of the fly and bind it back parallel to the shank all the way to the bend; catching it in up front helps thicken the body taper.
Bring the thread to the front and tie in four strands of fine pearl Crystal Flash, binding them back to the bend as well.
Twist the Crystal Flash strands loosely together and wrap them forward as an underbody to just behind the bead. Tie them off with the tips coming off the top of the shank, adding a wrap in front and then back over them so they stand as a short wing. Trim them roughly to length for now.
Wrap the red vinyl forward over the flash underbody in slightly spaced turns so pearl shows between the wraps, up to just behind the wing. Take two or three wraps to secure it and trim.
Take a few wraps in front of the wing to angle it back and to build a little thorax bulk behind the bead, remembering the whip finish will add a few more wraps there.
Trim the Crystal Flash wing to length, whip finish behind the bead, and finish with a drop of head cement or UV resin.
