Red/Silver Zebra Midge

Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/midge, 16-22
  • Thread Red 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Silver bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Thread body Red thread (as needed)
  • Wire rib Silver wire (small, one length)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a silver bead onto the hook and seat it behind the eye. Start red thread behind the bead.
  2. Lay a smooth thread base from the bead to a point above the barb. Keep it thin, half the bulk you think.
  3. Catch in a length of small silver wire at the rear.
  4. Wrap the red thread forward in touching turns to build a slim, even body up to the bead.
  5. Counter-wrap the silver wire forward in 5-6 open, evenly spaced turns for segmentation, then helicopter it to break the wire clean.
  6. Build a tiny thread collar behind the bead, whip finish and add a dot of head cement.
