Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1xl nymph, 12-18
  • Thread Rusty brown 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Brown hackle fibers Brown hackle fibers (tail)
  • Quill or dubbing Reddish brown (abdomen)
  • Ultra wire Gold wire (rib)
  • Dubbing Red-brown dubbing (thorax)
  • Mottled turkey or pheasant Natural pheasant tail fibers (wingcase)
  • Partridge Brown hen hackle (legs (optional))

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and tie in 3 brown hackle fibers as a tail, half a shank long, plus a length of gold wire.
  2. Wrap a slim reddish-brown quill or dubbing abdomen to the 60% mark.
  3. Rib forward with 4-5 open turns of gold wire and helicopter off.
  4. Tie in a section of mottled turkey or pheasant for the wingcase, pointing back over the abdomen.
  5. Dub a fatter red-brown thorax up to just behind the eye.
  6. Pull the wingcase over the thorax and bind it at the eye; optionally tie a few partridge fibers each side as legs.
  7. Whip finish and cement.
