Red Palmer

Wet Fly · Trout · Beginner · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly, 1x long, 10-14
  • Thread Red 8/0

Materials

  • Rib Fine gold wire (fine)
  • Body Red wool or seal's fur (dubbed full)
  • Hackle Red game (brown) cock hackle, palmered (1)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in the gold wire and a red game hackle by its tip at the bend.
  2. Dub a full red body forward to just behind the eye.
  3. Palmer the hackle forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns. The full-length hackle is the fly's engine, pulsing in any current.
  4. Counter-wrap the gold wire through the hackle to reinforce it, wiggling it so no fibers are trapped.
  5. Tie off the wire, whip finish, and pick out a little dubbing between hackle turns.
