Red Hook Midge

Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/midge, red-finish hook, 16-22
  • Thread Red 12/0 (or 70 denier)

Materials

  • Bead (optional) Black or silver, small (1)
  • Ultra wire Silver, fine (rib)
  • Dubbing Black dubbing (small pinch (thorax))
  • UV resin Clear uv resin (body coat)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a small bead to the eye if using one, then start red thread behind it.
  2. Run red thread to the bend in smooth touching turns for a slim, glossy red body.
  3. Tie in fine silver wire at the bend and rib it forward in 5-6 even turns for crisp segmentation, then helicopter off.
  4. Build a tiny thorax of a few black dubbing wraps right behind the bead.
  5. Whip finish, then coat the body with a thin layer of UV resin or head cement for a wet, glassy shine.
