Run black UTC 70 thread down the barbless competition hook to the hook point and trim the excess.
Pull a bunch of fibers from one side of a claret-dyed hen cape feather, align the tips, and bind in a short tail with a couple of turns. Keep the other side of the feather for the throat.
Bind in the fine silver wire, then tie in the red holo tinsel, taking a good length of it because the same strand forms the head later.
Tie in a single strand of peacock herl at the same point and run the thread down to the eye.
Turn the herl the opposite way to the thread and wind it forward in touching turns to within two millimetres of the eye. Secure it with a couple of thread turns, then give it a shake and it should snap off; a couple more turns neaten it up.
Wind the red holo tinsel forward in five or six open turns to the same point, pulling firmly - it can take it - and secure with a couple of thread turns. Leave the tinsel hanging; you need it again.
Counter-wind the silver wire forward in four or five open turns to lock the body and the tinsel, secure it with thread and shake it off.
Take fibers from the other side of the claret hen feather, preferring those near the tip for colour and movement, and set them as a throat with a pinch and loop. They should reach the hook point and no further. Trim the excess.
Build a neat, even thread head, then wind the hanging red holo tinsel over it in either direction, overlapping freely, until no black thread shows anywhere on the head.
Secure with one turn of thread, pull back, take another turn, then a single half hitch to keep thread bulk off the red head. Trim the thread and the tinsel as close as you can.
Give the head a good dollop of varnish over the tinsel and thread, dab it round with a finger or thumb to spread the excess, then run something blunt through the eye to clear it.
