Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 3 versions

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1xl-2xl nymph, 10-16
  • Thread Black 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Goose biots Brown goose biots (2 (tail))
  • Peacock herl Natural peacock herl (2-3 strands)
  • Oval tinsel Gold oval tinsel (rib)
  • Hen hackle Brown hen hackle (1 feather)
  • Goose biots White goose biots (2 (wing))
  • Red thread Red thread (head)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at the bend and tie in two brown goose biots as a forked tail, split into a shallow V, each half a shank long.
  2. Tie in gold oval tinsel and 2-3 peacock herls, then wrap the herl forward to the 70% mark for a plump body.
  3. Rib with 4-5 open turns of gold tinsel and tie off.
  4. Tie in a brown hen hackle and take 2 turns, sweeping the fibers back as a collar and beard.
  5. Set two white goose biots flat over the top as a shallow V-wing, tips to mid-body, shiny side up.
  6. Switch to red thread and build a bright red head over the wing butts, the signature, then whip finish and cement.
