If using a bead, slide a gold bead to the eye. Mount the hook and start orange thread behind it, laying a base back to the bend.
Tie in a small tuft of fox squirrel back fur as a tail, half a shank length long, guard hairs and all.
Catch in oval gold tinsel at the tail base.
Dub the abdomen with orange-tan fox squirrel belly fur over the rear two thirds of the shank. Keep it reasonably tight — the contrast between a smoother abdomen and a rough thorax is the point of the fly.
Spiral the oval tinsel forward over the abdomen in 5 evenly spaced turns and tie it off.
Dub a deliberately rough thorax from fox squirrel back fur with the guard hairs left in, picking it out afterwards so it looks spiky rather than combed.
On sizes 10 and 12, take one turn of speckled hen as a soft leg collar and sweep the fibres back to the hook point. Leave it off on smaller sizes.
