  • Hook Down-eye salmon / steelhead, 1/0-6
  • Thread Black 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Hackle fibers Red hackle fibers (tail)
  • Floss Red floss (short butt)
  • Chenille Black chenille (body)
  • Oval tinsel Silver oval tinsel (rib)
  • Calf tail or bucktail White bucktail (wing)
  • Saddle hackle Black saddle hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at the bend and tie in a sparse tail of red hackle fibers, half a shank long.
  2. Wrap a short red floss butt over the tail base, a few turns only. This red butt is what sets it apart from the standard Skunk.
  3. Tie in silver oval tinsel, then black chenille, and wrap the chenille forward to the 80% mark for the body.
  4. Rib forward with 5 evenly spaced turns of tinsel and tie off.
  5. Tie in a black saddle hackle, take 3-4 turns, then sweep the fibers down and back as a beard.
  6. Stack a sparse white calf tail or bucktail wing on top, tips reaching the tail, and bind it down.
  7. Form a neat head, whip finish, and cement.
