Mount the barbless wet fly hook and lay a base of black thread from behind the eye back to where the barb would have been.
Wax the thread and dub a short, lightly tapered butt of red wool at the rear of the shank; the tyer snips a few lengths of red wool yarn and runs them through a coffee grinder to make dubbing, using only the fibers that blended properly.
Advance the thread a touch and bind in three or four peacock herl. Take three or four wraps over the brittle bitter ends, then snap them off rather than snipping them.
Bind the herl in again at the front of the red butt and leave the bobbin hanging about halfway along the shank, where it will corral the strands if they start to spread. Wrap the herls forward together, unspun, to about 80% of the shank, tie off, and snip the ends where the stems are too thick to break.
Prepare a light brown hen hackle: strip a small tying point, mount it concave side toward the hook with a few light wraps, then fold the butt back and take a few more wraps over the fold. The stem is thin, so nothing can be pulled really tight. Snip the waste.
Take three wraps of the hen hackle for the collar, tie off and trim.
Lick your fingers, sweep the collar fibers back, and build the sloped front of a wet fly head with a few thread wraps.
Cut two matched slips of mottled turkey, splay them slightly and set one on each side of the shank so they marry over the top. Hold them with a loose pinch wrap, pull up on the near side and check the position, then lock them in with several firm wraps and snip the butts.
Tidy the head with a few more wraps, whip finish, snip any stray fibers as close as you can get, and coat the head with cement.
