How to tie it
Start red 8/0 behind the eye of the long dry fly hook and lay one even layer of thread all the way to the bend. Foam grips a threaded shank; it slips on bare wire.
Tie the cut foam body in at its taper, at the bend. Don't fuss over how tidy the tie-in looks. Thread wraps and the belly material cover all of it.
Take a two-turn whip finish to park the thread, then use the rotary function to wrap red poly yarn forward into an even belly. Wrapping this way lets you keep the yarn on its spool and waste far less material.
Secure the yarn, trim it and give the foam a clean, level landing spot before folding it forward. Lock the foam down with three or four medium-pressure wraps. Too tight and the thread cuts the foam, too loose and it rolls around the shank.
Tie a bunch of Para Post poly yarn in for the wing, take two or three wraps, then fold it back over itself the way you would a Chubby Chernobyl wing and trim it level with the hook bend.
Add a pre-cut tab of orange 2mm foam over the top as a sighter. It makes the fly visible on the water and adds a little more float.
Tie the barred rubber legs in as loops rather than as single strands, which keeps them out of the way while you whip finish, then cut the loops open, taper the head and you're done.
