How to tie it
Mount the heavy size 8 wet fly hook and start black thread, running a smooth base back to above the hook point and on to the bend; a floss body demands a tidy underbody.
Tie in small gold tinsel at the bend, fold the tag end back and trap it along the top of the shank so it helps fill the body space, then take a few turns of tinsel at the rear to form the tag.
Tie in the red floss at the rear, pulling the twist out and flattening the strand.
Wrap the floss forward in smooth touching turns to just behind the eye, watching the hook point, then tie off and trim. Add a second layer back and forward if you want depth of color.
Rib the body forward with evenly spaced open turns of the gold tinsel and tie it off; starting the first turn just in front of any bump at the rear will hide it.
Turn the fly over or reach underneath and tie in a small bunch of blue dun hen fibers as a throat, reaching back to about the hook point.
Tie a wing of two matched brown mallard slips on top, roughly the length of the hook, set low over the body.
Build a large head to finish, whip finish and coat with head cement.
