Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly, 8-12
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Rib Flat silver tinsel (fine)
  • Body Black floss or wool (slim)
  • Hackle Black hen hackle (1)
  • Wing Crow or black-dyed duck quill slips (1 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap thread to the bend and tie in the silver rib.
  2. Form a slim black body over three-quarters of the shank.
  3. Rib with 4-5 open turns of silver, the only flash on an otherwise all-black fly, giving it a segmented silhouette.
  4. Wind 2-3 turns of black hen hackle and sweep it down.
  5. Set matched black quill wings low over the body and whip finish.
