Rainbow Nymph

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1XL nymph or scud (e.g. TMC 2457), 12-16
  • Thread Red or brown 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Bead Gold bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Coq de leon (tail) Pardo (6-8 fibers)
  • Scud/sow dubbing (body) Rainbow (pinch)
  • Wire rib Gold wire (fine, 1 strand)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a gold bead onto the hook, seat it behind the eye, then start thread and cover the shank to the bend.
  2. Tie in a small clump of coq de leon fibers as a tail, one hook-gap long, and catch in a strand of fine gold wire.
  3. Dub a slightly tapered body of rainbow scud/sow dubbing forward to just behind the bead, half the dubbing you think, kept buggy.
  4. Counter-rib 4-5 evenly spaced turns of gold wire, wiggling through the dubbing so you don't trap fibers, then helical-lock and break off.
  5. Pick out the dubbing along the sides and belly for legs and gills.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead, snip, and cement.
