Materials

How to tie it

  1. Mount a standard-length size 12 nymph hook and put about ten wraps of .015 lead wire on, kept up at the thorax area.
  2. Start grey 70 denier thread behind the eye and wrap the lead wraps in.
  3. Tie in a grey wood duck flank tail, about three quarters of the hook shank long. Use grey wood duck rather than lemon wood duck or the mallard imitation. Take a couple of wraps, pull it down to size, put a wrap underneath the tail, then bind it in and trim the excess, which is not long enough to fold back.
  4. Bring the thread back to the tail and spin a skinny noodle of grey-brown dubbing, here wool roving chopped up, which gives a nice scraggly look with plenty of hair in it.
  5. Wrap the abdomen forward, stopping right at the back end of the lead wraps.
  6. Dub a dark grey thorax over the lead, an Antron blend here, though muskrat close to the skin is a good dark grey too.
  7. Turn a grey wood duck flank feather over and tie in a throat in place of legs, loose first so you can position it, with the tips reaching the hook point. Fold the butts back to make them easier to trim, then snip.
  8. Clean up the head, whip finish, add head cement, then run a hackle stem through the eye so you know it is open.
