How to tie it
Slide the 2.5mm copper Umpqua Jig Bomb bead onto the size 16 Umpqua 400BN and start the olive Veevus Body Quill right behind it; the body quill has a little sparkle worked into it and does the job of thread and body at once.
Come back up and wrap against the bead to lock it so it cannot slide around, then take the thread back to where the barb would be.
Tie in a handful of coq de leon pardo fibers for the tail, about a shank length long. Use very few wraps while you adjust them into position, then take touching wraps forward over the butts for most of the shank and trim the excess.
Build the taper: start at the front, work back in wide open turns, then come forward again, and repeat a shorter pass so the front is a little thicker. Keep it a very thin fly.
Take the body quill almost to the front and put in a two or three turn whip finish; the resin will lock it later, so this just holds everything while you work. Trim the thread.
Start the fluorescent orange Semperfli 12/0 behind the bead for the hot spot, take two or three turns and no more than about five in total, checking the underside of the fly stays clean and the thread has not slid back. Two or three turn whip finish, trim, and touch the frayed end with a lighter to remove it.
Put a small dot of black Solarez on the head of the fly and hit it with the light.
Coat the body with thin hard Solarez, just enough to cover the body quill for shine and protection rather than building bulk, keep it even all round, and cure it.
