Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly, 10-14
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Tail (optional) Brown hackle fibers (few)
  • Body Orange floss (slim)
  • Hackle Brown hackle, palmered (1)
  • Wing Grey mallard flank (1 slip folded)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap thread to the bend and tie in the orange floss plus a brown hackle by its tip.
  2. Wrap the floss body forward to the 75% mark.
  3. Palmer the brown hackle forward in 4-5 open spirals over the body. The palmered hackle gives the fly its leggy, fluttering action in current.
  4. Tie in a folded grey mallard flank slip as a low wing over the body.
  5. Whip finish a small head.
