Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Curved shank scud/caddis hook, #12-18 (size 16 shown; #14-16 most useful)
  • Thread Match the body color (olive shown) 70 denier

Materials

  • Fur dubbing (SLF/sow scud type) Olive, tan or dun fur dubbing (Enough for a thin body)
  • Antron or Z-lon White or tan antron z lon (Small tuft for the wing)
  • Fur dubbing, darker Black (or dark brown) fur dubbing darker (Enough for a full head/thorax)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the curved shank hook and lay a thread base of matching color around the bend.
  2. Wax the thread and spin a fairly thin noodle of olive dubbing, using the first couple of wraps to walk the thread back around the bend to where the body should start.
  3. Dub the body forward in touching turns to about the 65% point, keeping it slim and slightly spiky.
  4. Tie in a small tuft of Antron or Z-lon on top at the front of the body with a pinch wrap, leaving it long for now, and trim the butts off in front.
  5. Wax the thread again and spin a noodle of the darker dubbing, building it thicker than you think you need.
  6. Wrap a fat dubbed head and thorax from the wing tie-in point up to the eye so the fly shows a full, buggy silhouette.
  7. Whip finish with four or five turns behind the eye and cut the thread cleanly.
  8. Pull the wing tuft tight and trim it short, just past the bend, like an emerger shuck. Add a drop of head cement.
