Mount a size 16 curved-shank hook and lay a base of olive 70 denier thread around the bend. The recipe matches the thread to the body colour so it does not show through the dubbing.
Wax the thread and spin a fairly thin noodle of olive fur dubbing, using the first couple of wraps to walk it back around the bend to where the body should start.
Wrap the body forward, leaving it slim and a little spiky, and stop with the front third of the shank bare for the head.
Tie a small tuft of Antron or Z-lon on top with a pinch wrap for the wing, leaving it long for now, and snip the butts off in front.
Wax the thread again and spin a noodle of the darker dubbing, in this case black superfine; add a second application if it is not thick enough, because the fat head is what gives the fly its buggy silhouette.
Wrap the head from the wing forward to the eye, noticeably thicker than the body.
Put in a four or five turn whip finish behind the eye and cut the thread cleanly with scissors.
Pull the wing tight and trim it to a short tuft, like the shuck on an emerger, then add a drop of head cement.
