Tyer Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly hook, 14-18
  • Thread black 8/0

Materials

  • Closed-cell foam strip Black craft foam mm (body)
  • Elk hair Natural deer hair (downwing)
  • Hackle Brown hackle (1 for collar)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and tie in a thin strip of black foam at the bend, leaving the tag pointing rearward.
  2. Wrap the thread forward to the 70% point building a thin underbody.
  3. Pull the foam forward over the shank and tie it down at the 70% point to form the body, letting a short tag extend past the bend.
  4. Tie in a clump of elk hair as a downwing extending to the rear of the body.
  5. Wrap a brown hackle collar in front of the wing, tie off, whip finish, and cement.
