Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL / curved stonefly nymph hook, 4-10
  • Thread Black 6/0 or 140 denier

Materials

  • Bead Gold or black bead (1)
  • Goose biots or rubber (tails) Black/Purple goose biots or rubber (2)
  • Chenille or dubbing (body) Purple ice dub (as needed)
  • Round rubber legs Black or Purple rubber legs (3 pairs)
  • Round rubber (antennae) Black ostrich herl (1 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the bead to the eye, mount the 3XL hook, start the thread, and wrap to the bend.
  2. Tie in two biot or rubber tails at the bend, splayed into a V.
  3. Tie in the purple chenille (or start a purple dubbing body).
  4. Wrap the body forward, pausing to figure-8 in a pair of rubber legs at the 40%, 60%, and 75% marks so three pairs splay off the thorax.
  5. Continue the body up to just behind the bead.
  6. Tie in a pair of rubber antennae projecting forward over the eye.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead and cement.
