Classic Recipe

  • Hook Steelhead iron, 2-8
  • Thread Black or wine 6/0

Materials

  • Tag Flat silver tinsel (1)
  • Tail Purple hackle fibers (small bunch)
  • Rib Flat silver tinsel (1)
  • Body Purple wool, floss, or chenille (1)
  • Hackle Purple saddle or hen (1)
  • Wing Dark brown or black bucktail (sparse clump)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap a short tag of flat silver tinsel at the bend, 3-4 turns.
  2. Tie in a tail of purple hackle fibers about half a shank length long.
  3. Tie in the tinsel rib, then the purple body material; wrap the body forward with a slight taper, stopping two eye-widths behind the eye.
  4. Spiral the rib forward in 4-5 evenly spaced turns.
  5. Take 2-3 turns of purple hackle as a collar and sweep the fibers down and back.
  6. Tie a sparse dark bucktail wing on top, extending to the end of the tail, then build a neat head, whip finish, and cement.
