Purple Haze Special

Dry Fly · Trout · Advanced · 1 version

Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Standard length dry fly hook, #16-18 (size 16 shown)
  • Thread Purple 8/0

Materials

  • Zelon Mayfly brown (Small clump for the tail)
  • Stretch floss (Bug Legs) Purple flex floss (One strand for the abdomen)
  • Poly yarn / Congo hair White poly yarn (Small clump for the wing)
  • Rooster hackle Brown hackle (One feather)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the size 16 dry fly hook and start purple thread at about the 70% point.
  2. Tie in a small clump of mayfly brown Zelon on top of the shank for the tail, taking care to keep it centered on top and not letting thread torque roll it around the hook.
  3. Trim the tail to about three quarters of a shank length, cut the forward butts off at an angle, and bind them down, using the thread to build a smooth, slightly tapered underbody. Lumps here will show through the floss.
  4. Tie in the purple stretch floss at the front, wrap it back to the tail under tension, then return the thread to the front and wrap the floss forward in touching turns to build the abdomen. Tie off at the 70% point and trim.
  5. Tie in a clump of white poly yarn at the 70% point as a single upright wing, then take a bank of thread wraps in front of it to build a dam that stands the wing up. Come back to the original tie-in point and trim the butts, leaving a short stub.
  6. Tie in the brown rooster hackle with the shiny side facing forward, taking one wrap of thread behind the wing and then binding the stem down in front.
  7. Take two full turns of hackle behind the wing, then lift the hackle out of the way, take one full thread wrap ahead of it, bring the hackle in front and tie it off. Clip the excess.
  8. Take a couple of half hitches or a whip finish, pushing everything back so the eye is not crowded, then clip the thread.
  9. Stand the wing up and trim it so it sits just slightly taller than the hackle collar.
