How to tie it
Mount the 7X-long streamer hook and start black thread near the eye. Tie in large mylar tinsel with the silver side toward the hook and bind it back with open wraps to just around the bend.
Bring the thread forward to about the hook point, park it with three loose wraps, and take three turns of tinsel at the rear to form the tag. Back the loose wraps off and tie the tinsel off with two tight wraps behind and one in front.
Take the thread to the front and tie in a long piece of red floss. Wrap it back to the tag and then forward again so the body carries at least two layers; floss goes translucent when wet, so a single layer is not enough. Tie off at the front.
Rib forward with evenly spaced open turns of the mylar tinsel, leaving red showing between the wraps. Tie off, fold the tinsel back and lock it with a few more wraps.
Turn the fly or reach underneath and tie in a long sparse pinch of white bucktail as the throat, reaching back to about the hook point or beyond. Trim the butts.
Prepare the wing ahead of time: stack four purple saddle hackles, put a small drop of UV resin where the barbs meet the stems and cure it so the four move as one unit.
Lay the wing on top of the shank with a couple of loose wraps, check that it rides off the top of the fly at the angle you want (a small thread bump behind it will lift it if it lies too flat), then lock it in and trim the butts.
Tie in a jungle cock nail on each side as a cheek, two wraps at a time so you can adjust the angle, then secure and trim.
Tie in four strands of peacock herl on top as a topping, as long as the wing, using loose wraps at the tie-in point and tighter wraps ahead of it. Trim the butts.
Build a big tapered streamer head from the eye back, whip finish, and coat with UV resin. Finally, pinch the peacock topping under your thumb with a bodkin and draw it back to put a slight curl in the herl.
