Materials

  • Oval tinsel (tag & rib) Silver oval tinsel (small)
  • Pheasant tippet (tail) Purple-dyed pheasant tippet (small bunch)
  • Trilobal dub (butt) Fl. Cerise trilobal dub (pinch)
  • Trilobal dub (body) Purple ice dub (pinch)
  • Hackle (collar) Purple hackle (1 feather)
  • Calf tail (wing) White calf body hair (sparse bunch)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the spey hook, start the red thread, and wrap back to the bend.
  2. Wrap a short tag of silver oval tinsel at the bend and tie it off.
  3. Tie in a sparse purple pheasant-tippet tail, about one hook gap long.
  4. Dub a short fluorescent-cerise trilobal butt at the base of the tail.
  5. Tie in silver oval tinsel for the rib, then dub a purple trilobal body forward to the 80% mark.
  6. Rib the tinsel forward in 5 evenly spaced turns and tie off.
  7. Tie in a purple hackle and take 2-3 turns as a swept-back collar.
  8. Tie a sparse white calf-tail wing low over the top, reaching to the tail; build a neat red head, whip finish, and cement.
