Purple Adams

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry-fly hook, 12-18
  • Thread Gray or Black 8/0

Materials

  • Hackle fibers (tail) Mixed brown and grizzly (small bunch)
  • Dry-fly dubbing (body) Purple ice dub (pinch)
  • Grizzly hackle tips (wings) Grizzly hackle (2 (optional))
  • Dry hackle (collar) 1 brown + 1 grizzly dry fly hackle (2 feathers)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the dry hook and start the thread at the 70% mark.
  2. Tie in two grizzly hackle tips upright and divided as wings (or skip for a simpler collar-hackle version).
  3. Tie in a mixed brown-and-grizzly hackle-fiber tail, one shank length long, at the bend.
  4. Dub a slim purple body from the bend forward to the wing.
  5. Tie in one brown and one grizzly hackle and wrap them together in 4-5 turns through the thorax for a full, bushy collar.
  6. Whip finish and add a small drop of cement at the eye.
