Reference Recipe

  • Hook curved scud/pupa hook, 12-16
  • Thread Brown 70 denier

Materials

  • Bead Gold bead (1)
  • Sparkle/Antron dubbing (abdomen) Olive or tan dubbing (pinch)
  • Ultra wire (rib) Copper wire (fine, short length)
  • Hare's ear / ice dub (thorax) Dark brown dubbing (pinch)
  • Partridge fibers (legs, optional) Natural partridge (a few)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the gold bead to the eye, mount the curved hook, and start the thread.
  2. Tie in the fine copper wire at the bend for the rib.
  3. Dub a slim, slightly tapered abdomen of olive sparkle dubbing forward to the 70% mark.
  4. Counter-wrap the wire rib forward in 5 evenly spaced turns to segment the abdomen, tie off, and helicopter to break it.
  5. Dub a fatter thorax of dark hare's ear behind the bead to suggest the swelling emerging pupa.
  6. Optional: sweep a few partridge fibers under the thorax as legs.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead and cement.
