How to tie it
Mount a size 12 2X-long nymph hook and lay a base of black 70 denier thread all the way back to the bend.
Preen the fibers of one orange black-tipped side feather back until only a squared tip bunch is left, leave the stem in, and bind it in at the bend for a tail about one hook gap long with the black bars showing.
Tie in the body components in the reverse order you will use them: catch in the gold brassie wire rib first, running the wraps forward from the front of the tail, and bury the stub.
Lay a strand of medium pearl tinsel on top of the shank, take a couple of medium wraps and check it is coming directly off the top, then secure it with tight wraps back to the tail and bury the tag end.
Wax the thread and dub a fairly thick, shaggy noodle of brown rabbit with a few hare's mask guard hairs mixed in. Back the thread up a couple of wraps to the front of the tail and dub forward to a little past mid-shank, building what taper you can.
Flip the pearl tinsel forward over the top of the abdomen, hold it with a couple of loose wraps to check it is centered, then lock it down with tight wraps and snip the excess.
Take the first turn of brassie wire right at the base of the body, then rib forward over the flashback and abdomen with four or five open turns; catch it off with two or three tight wraps, put tension on the thread, pull the wire down and spin it off.
From the same feather used for the tail, pull a big chunk of the longer fibers nearer the base and bind them on top with the tips facing back for the wing case, wrapping back to the front of the abdomen and burying the butts.
Wax the thread again and dub straight hare's mask this time, no rabbit, wrapping it on thick for a thorax noticeably fatter and buggier than the abdomen; clean up the front before the legs.
Cut a small V-notch out of the tip of a burgundy rump feather, about ten fibers each side, and lay the two halves down either side of the thorax. Take loose wraps first, leave them long, check they are coming off both sides evenly, then shorten them and lock them in with tight wraps and snip the excess.
Push the legs out to the sides, fold the wing case forward over the thorax, take a couple of loose wraps to check the proportion, then hold it tight and secure it with tighter wraps; snip the excess feather.
Sweep everything back, build a big head at the eye, put in a four-turn whip finish and snip, add head cement or UV resin, then rough up the abdomen and thorax with a velcro brush so the fibers stand out and give the fly life.
