How to tie it
Mount the 2X-long nymph hook and lay a black thread base back to the bend.
Preen the fibers of an orange, black-tipped pheasant side feather back so only a squared tip bunch remains, and tie that in at the bend, stem and all, for a tail about one hook gap long with the black bars showing.
Tie in the components in reverse order of use: first gold brassie wire at the front of the tail, then a strand of medium pearl tinsel laid directly on top of the shank and bound back to the tail. Check that the tinsel comes off dead center on top before locking it down.
Wax the thread and dub a fairly thick, shaggy noodle of brown rabbit mixed with hare's mask guard hairs. Dub the abdomen from the tail forward to just past the 50% point, building a slight taper.
Fold the pearl tinsel forward over the top of the abdomen, check that it lies centered, lock it down with two tight wraps and trim.
Take one full turn of the gold wire at the very back, then rib forward over the flashback and body with four or five open turns; tie off, and spin the wire until it breaks.
From the same feather used for the tail, strip a wide bunch of fibers from nearer the base and tie them in on top at the front of the abdomen with the tips pointing rearward; this becomes the wing case. Bind the butts forward.
Wax the thread again and dub a big, buggy thorax of straight hare's mask, leaving room behind the eye.
Tie in a burgundy pheasant rump feather by the tip in front of the thorax and take one or two turns as a soft-hackle leg collar, stroking the fibers down and back, then tie off and trim.
Fold the wing case forward over the thorax, secure it behind the eye with tight wraps, trim the butts, build a small head, whip finish and cement.
