  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-18
  • Thread Brown 8/0

Materials

  • Z-lon (trailing shuck) Amber zelon or antron (small tuft)
  • Pheasant tail fibers (body) Natural pheasant tail fibers (4-5 fibers)
  • Elk or deer hair (wing) Natural / bleached elk hair (1 clump)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a sparse amber Z-lon trailing shuck at the bend, stubby, to imitate the trailing pupal skin.
  3. Wrap 4-5 pheasant tail fibers forward as a slim body up to the 75% mark; tie off.
  4. Stack a clump of elk hair, measure the tips to just past the bend, and bind it at the 75% mark so the wing sweeps back tent-style over the body; keep the butts pointing forward.
  5. Trim the butts to form a small head, whip finish behind the eye, cement.
