  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-20
  • Thread Brown 8/0

Materials

  • Z-lon / Antron (trailing shuck) Amber zelon or antron (small tuft)
  • Pheasant tail fibers (body) Natural pheasant tail fibers (4-5 fibers)
  • Deer hair (wing) Coastal / natural (1 clump)
  • Dubbing (thorax) Brown / PT (1 pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. At the 65% mark, stack a clump of fine deer hair and stand it up in a 180-degree fan wing, length about one shank; trim the butts and wrap over them.
  3. Bind a sparse amber Z-lon trailing shuck at the bend; keep it stubby (half the shuck you think).
  4. Tie in 4-5 pheasant tail fibers and wrap them forward as a slim tapered body up to the wing; tie off.
  5. Dub a touch of matching dubbing around the wing base to prop the wing up and fill the thorax.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye, cement.
