Materials

  • Z-lon or pheasant tail (shuck/tail) Amber / natural pheasant tail (small tuft)
  • Pheasant tail fibers (abdomen) Natural pheasant tail fibers (4-5 fibers)
  • Wire rib Copper wire (1 length, fine)
  • CDC feather (emerging wing) Natural dun cdc feather (1)
  • Peacock herl or PT (thorax) Natural peacock herl (2 strands)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base along the curved shank down to the bend.
  2. Tie in a short amber Z-lon (or a few pheasant-tail tips) at the bend as a trailing shuck, only about half a shank long.
  3. Bind in a fine copper wire and 4-5 pheasant tail fibers; wrap the fibers forward over the rear two-thirds as a slim abdomen; tie off but save the wire.
  4. Counter-rib the copper wire forward in 4-5 open turns, tie off, snip.
  5. Tie in a CDC feather and fold a short tuft of it forward over the thorax as a low emerging wing (or take one loose turn); sweep it back and pin.
  6. Dub or wrap a small peacock/PT thorax to just behind the eye, keeping the CDC swept back.
  7. Whip finish behind the eye, cement.
