Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry/terrestrial hook, 8-12
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Sheet foam (body) Black craft foam mm (3-4mm strip)
  • Sheet foam (wing case/head) Black floss (1mm strip)
  • Deer or elk hair / thin wing (underwing) Black or dark dun hair (1 clump)
  • Para-post (indicator) Fluorescent orange egg sac (1 clump)
  • Rubber legs Black ostrich herl (2 strands)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base over the rear two-thirds of the shank to the bend.
  2. Cut a black foam strip slightly wider than the gap and taper the rear. Bind it on top at the bend and advance the thread forward in 3 segmenting bands to the 60% mark, cinching a plump black body.
  3. Tie in a sparse dark underwing over the body, tent-style, tips reaching just past the bend.
  4. Figure-8 one black rubber leg on each side at the 60% mark so legs kick out and back.
  5. Fold the 1mm black foam forward over the thorax as a wing case and head; bind at 60% and again behind the eye, leaving a short blunt head.
  6. Post a small fluorescent-orange para-post indicator upright at the thorax for visibility.
  7. Whip finish under the head, trim legs to about one shank, cement.
