Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL streamer/dry hook (Fulling Mill 36040 or similar), 4-8
  • Thread Fluorescent orange 6/0

Materials

  • Sheet foam (body) Black craft foam mm (6mm strip)
  • Sheet foam (wing case/head) Black floss (1mm strip)
  • Thin wing material (underwing) Light dun wing bud (1 clump)
  • Para-post (indicator) Dark gray + fluorescent orange material (1 clump each)
  • Rubber legs Speckled orange rubber legs (2 strands)

How to tie it

  1. Cover the rear two-thirds of the shank with thread down to the bend.
  2. Cut a strip of 6mm black foam slightly wider than the hook gap and taper the rear end. Bind it on top at the bend, then advance the thread in 3 evenly spaced segmenting bands to the 60% mark, cinching the foam into a plump body as you go.
  3. Tie in a sparse light-dun thin-wing over the body, flat and tent-like, length reaching just past the bend.
  4. Figure-8 one speckled rubber leg on each side at the 60% mark so a pair kicks out and back from each side.
  5. Fold a strip of 1mm black foam forward over the thorax to form a wing case and stubby head; bind it down at the 60% point and again just behind the eye, leaving a short head. Do not crowd the eye.
  6. Stack a clump of dark-gray then fluorescent-orange para-post upright at the thorax and anchor it as a high-vis indicator wing.
  7. Whip finish under the head, trim the legs to about one shank, cement the wraps.
