Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard to 2XL dry-fly hook, 10-12
  • Thread Olive 8/0

Materials

  • Foam strip (extended body) Olive frog foam (1 thin strip)
  • Microfibetts (tail, inside body) Dun microfibetts (2-3)
  • Para-post wing Hi-vis yellow or white (1 clump)
  • Dubbing (thorax) Olive ice dub (1 pinch)
  • Rooster hackle Grizzly dyed olive / dun rooster hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread mid-shank. Build the extended body off the back: bind a thin olive foam strip (with 2-3 microfibett tails trapped inside its tip) at the 60% mark and segment it rearward with 3-4 open thread bands, leaving the body extending about one shank past the bend; whip the tip and return the thread to the 60% mark.
  2. Post a hi-vis para-post wing upright at the 60% mark, anchoring its base with a few horizontal wraps so it stands tall (it lets you track the fly at dusk).
  3. Dub a robust olive thorax fore and aft of the post.
  4. Tie in the grizzly/olive rooster hackle at the base of the post; wind 5-6 parachute turns down the post and secure it under the wing.
  5. Sweep stray fibers clear, whip finish behind the eye, trim the post to about one shank, cement the wraps.
