Reference Recipe

  • Hook Gamakatsu saltwater series, 3X-strong (or size 10), 8
  • Thread white (colored with alcohol markers if desired) Semperfli Nano Silk 12/0

Materials

  • Brass bead Silver bead (one, 5/32 in (1/8 in on a size 10))
  • Magnum tiger-barred rabbit strip Hot pink/brown over peach (one tail section, about one body length)
  • Wire rib Hot pink wire mm (one strand, 0.2 mm (medium))
  • Flat tinsel Silver oval tinsel (one strand, 1.5 mm)
  • Straggle Legs Fluorescent dark pink cactus chenille (one strand for the collar)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the silver bead to the hook eye and start the thread behind it; wrap a base back to a point above the barb.
  2. Cut a section of the tiger-barred rabbit strip, pinch out some underfur, and moisten it. Measure it about the length of the body, leave a little of the peach base color showing at the back, and bind it down on top. Take a couple of thread wraps under the tail so it cannot foul around the bend.
  3. Tie in the pink wire rib at the tail tie-in point and leave it hanging.
  4. Tie in the silver flat tinsel at the same point, then run the thread forward to behind the bead. Wrap the tinsel forward in slightly overlapping turns to just behind the bead and tie it off.
  5. Counter-wrap the pink wire forward in 4-5 evenly spaced open turns, opposite the direction of the tinsel for strength, tie it off behind the bead and helicopter the excess.
  6. Tie in the Straggle Legs and take 2-3 turns directly behind the bead to form the collar; tie off and trim.
  7. Brush the collar out so it is a little shaggy, build a small thread collar behind the bead, whip finish, and cement.
