Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1XL nymph hook, 14-18
  • Thread Brown or olive 8/0

Materials

  • Pheasant tail fibers (tail) Natural pheasant tail fibers (3-4)
  • Goose or turkey biot (abdomen) Olive or brown goose turkey biot (1)
  • Mottled turkey (wingcase) Natural mottled turkey (1 section)
  • Flashabou (over wingcase) Pearl flashabou (few strands)
  • Thorax dubbing Olive-brown fine dubbing (small amount)
  • Partridge (legs) Brown hen hackle (few fibres)
  • Epoxy or UV resin (wingcase coat) Clear scud back thin skin (1 drop)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a short pheasant-tail tail, one-third shank past the bend.
  2. Tie in a single goose biot by its tip at the bend, edge set so it raises a rib as it wraps.
  3. Wrap the biot forward in touching turns to the 60% mark to form a crisply segmented abdomen, then tie off.
  4. Tie in a turkey wingcase with a few strands of pearl Flashabou over it, pointing back.
  5. Dub a fuller thorax.
  6. Add sparse partridge legs to each side of the thorax.
  7. Pull the wingcase forward, bind it at the eye, whip finish, and coat the wingcase with a drop of epoxy or UV resin.
