  • Thread Olive or brown 8/0

Materials

  • Pheasant tail fibers (tail) Natural pheasant tail fibers (3-4)
  • Abdomen dubbing Olive-brown fine dubbing (small amount)
  • Wire rib Gold wire (1 length)
  • Mottled turkey (wingcase) Natural mottled turkey (1 section)
  • Flashabou (over wingcase) Pearl flashabou (few strands)
  • Partridge or hen (legs) Brown hen hackle (few fibres)
  • Thorax dubbing Olive-brown fine dubbing (small amount)
  • Epoxy or UV resin (wingcase coat) Clear scud back thin skin (1 drop)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and tie in 3-4 pheasant-tail fibres as a short tail, one-third shank past the bend.
  2. Catch in fine gold wire, then dub a slim, tapered abdomen forward to the 60% mark.
  3. Rib the wire forward in 5-6 open turns and tie off.
  4. Tie in a section of mottled turkey for the wingcase with a few strands of pearl Flashabou over it, pointing back over the abdomen.
  5. Dub a fuller thorax.
  6. Tie in a few partridge or hen fibres as sparse legs on each side of the thorax.
  7. Pull the wingcase forward over the thorax and bind it behind the eye, then whip finish.
  8. Coat the wingcase with a drop of epoxy or UV resin, the 'poxy back' - and cure it to a glossy shell.
