Pot Belly Pig

Salmon/Steelhead · Salmon · Steelhead · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Salmon single, 4-8
  • Thread Orange 6/0

Materials

  • Eyes Bead chain or dumbbell (1 pair)
  • Tail Orange marabou (short)
  • Body Orange chenille, fat (pot-bellied)
  • Hackle Orange schlappen (palmered)
  • Collar Guinea (sparse)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the salmon single and lash a pair of bead-chain or dumbbell eyes on top near the eye, mounted on top so the fly rides hook-up over rocks.
  2. Wrap back to the bend and tie in a short orange marabou tail, roughly one shank long.
  3. Tie in an orange schlappen hackle by the tip, then tie in fat orange chenille.
  4. Wrap the chenille forward in a bulging, pot-bellied body up to the eyes. Build it fat to push water.
  5. Palmer the schlappen forward over the body in open turns and tie off behind the eyes.
  6. Tie in a sparse guinea feather and take a turn or two for a collar, sweeping the fibers back.
  7. Figure-8 thread around the eyes, build a head, whip finish and cement.
