Reference Recipe

Saddle hackles (tail) Red and white saddle hackles (4, splayed)
Flash Pearl flashabou (few strands)
Deer belly hair (spun body) Red, black, and white deer belly hair (several clumps)
Rubber legs To match rubber legs (2-4 strands)

Start thread at the bend and tie in a splayed tail of red and white saddle hackles about one shank length long, with a few strands of flash.
Add a collar of a couple of hackle wraps in front of the tail and sweep it back.
Spin the first clump of white deer belly hair in front of the tail and pack it tight.
Continue spinning alternating clumps of red, black, and white deer hair up the shank, packing each hard against the last, to just behind the eye.
Whip finish at the eye and take the hook out of the vise.
Trim the spun hair to a rounded popper shape (a flat, broad face at the front tapering to the tail) leaving it dense enough to pop.
Poke rubber legs through the sides with a needle and add a drop of cement to the whip finish.
