How to tie it
Lay a thread base to the start of the bend.
Tail: stack eight to ten moose fibers and tie them in about one body length or slightly longer. Do not cinch too hard. Moose will still flare. Leave the butts long and bind them down forward to about a third of the way up the shank to thicken the underbody, then trim.
Tie the narrow foam strip in at the front and bind it back to the tail, keeping it uniform without crushing it flat. This builds the thick underbody that lets more red show.
Underbody: tie the red floss in at the front, wrap it back to the tail and then forward again for two layers (wet floss goes translucent, so the second layer matters). Tie it off a couple of wraps behind the front tie-in point and trim.
Fold the foam forward over the top of the body, humpy style, and tie it down at the front. Cut it short and bury the nub.
Wing: fold a 1.5 inch piece of white poly yarn in half, tie it in upright at the front of the body and take a few wraps around the base of the yarn to gather it into a single clump. It is a wing, not a parachute post, but the wraps keep it tidy.
Park the thread behind the wing and tie in the brown hackle.
Take one and a half to two turns of hackle behind the wing, then three turns in front of it, tie off and trim. The hackle, not the foam, is what floats this fly.
Sweep the fibers back, make room and whip finish, trimming any fibers you trapped pointing forward.
Bunch the poly wing up, pull it tight and cut it off level with the top of the hackle.
